July 26th

By | The Daily Chronic - The Voice of the Reform Generation

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Fans attending this weekend’s NASCAR Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis will be greeted by a giant video board displaying the latest ad in the Marijuana Policy Project’s (MPP) “Marijuana is Safer” campaign.

The video ad, which resembles a beer commercial, compares alcohol and marijuana, pointing out that marijuana doesn’t contain calories, cause hangovers, or promote reckless, violent behavior.

“If you’re an adult who enjoys a good beer,” says the ad, “there’s a similar product you might want to know about.”

The video ends with the tagline  ”Less harmful than alcohol, and time to treat it that way,” and provides a link to MarijuanaIsSafer.org, which provides an introduction to marijuana, as well as information on marijuana’s impact on the consumer and on the community.

“We think it’s critical that the public recognize that marijuana is objectively less harmful than alcohol,” says MPP spokesperson Mason Tvert, the co-author of the book READ MORE

Chris PerezROCKY RIVER, OH – A police search of the home of Cleveland Indians pitcher Chris Perez yielded marijuana, pipes and other smoking paraphernalia, court documents said.

Perez, 28, and his wife, Melanie, attended a hearing Tuesday at Rocky River, Ohio, Municipal Court, where the inventory of items found by officers in the June 4 search was filed, the (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Thursday.

The couple pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor drug charges.

The search of the Perez home was conducted after postal inspectors detected and intercepted a package, mailed from Los Angeles to the Perez family dog, that smelled of marijuana, a Postal Service report on the incident read.

Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez’s Marijuana Fine Cut from $900k to $100k

June 30th

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Nevada State Athletic Commission has slashed boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s fine over a failed drug test from $900,000 to $100,000.

Commission members took the action Friday after Chavez’s attorneys argued the excessive fine violated the boxer’s constitutional rights and negotiated to reduce it.

Chavez tested positive for marijuana after his first professional loss in Las Vegas on Sept. 15.

He was slapped with the $900,000 fine by the commission on Feb. 28 as a repeat offender of the panel’s drug policy. Chavez had tested positive for diuretics in 2009.

He has served a nine-month suspension that was part of the original punishment and will return to the ring Sept. 7 against Brian Vera in Los Angeles.

Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez’s Marijuana Fine Cut from $900k to $100k was written by and appears in full on The Daily Chronic.

Marijuana Sent to Home of Cleveland Indians’ Closer Chris Perez

June 9th

CLEVELAND, OH — Drug agents are investigating a suspected marijuana shipment mailed to the suburban home of Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez, authorities said Wednesday.

Rocky River Police Chief Kelly Stillman said city officers, a regional narcotics unit and postal inspectors were involved in Tuesday’s daylong operation investigating a delivery to Perez’s home in the lakeside Cleveland suburb.

No charges have been filed and the matter remains under investigation. A message seeking comment was left for Perez’s attorney.

At a news conference Wednesday, the chief said the operation likely originated with a package that appeared suspicious to postal employees. “They took it from there,” he said.

In a brief written update Wednesday afternoon, the chief confirmed the shipment was suspected to be marijuana, but said that the state crime laboratory will have to confirm that.

“Depending on what it was and how much it was, charges will be filed accordingly,” Stillman said.

Officers with a search warrant took evidence from the Perez house, according to the chief, but the seized items weren’t specified.

Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said in a statement that the team had talked with Perez and was “gathering additional information.”

Manager Terry Francona, addressing the situation before the Indians’ Wednesday afternoon game against the Yankees in New York, said he had reached out to Perez to . . . . . READ MORE

Georgia Safety Harvey-Clemons Faces Suspension in Marijuana Incident

May 29th

University of Georgia marijuana

ATHENS, GA – University of Georgia safety Josh Harvey-Clemons, implicated in an on-campus marijuana incident, may miss the first game of the season, school policy says.

Harvey-Clemons, a sophomore, admitted marijuana use to campus police May 15 after they were called to investigate an odor of marijuana near his dorm room. Also present was sophomore tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith.

Flournoy-Smith, who was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor charge in February, was advised to transfer to another school by football Coach Mark Richt, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

The university’s Athletic Association’s policy on marijuana use calls for a suspension of 10 percent of competition dates for a first-time violation, or one game in Harvey-Clemons’ case, the newspaper said. The Bulldogs’ first game of the season is Aug. 31 against Clemson.
