Canada Liberal Party Leader Says Legalize Marijuana

July 27th

By | The Daily Chronic - The Voice of the Reform Generation

VANCOUVER, BC — Canada’s opposition Liberal Party head Justin Trudeau has called for the legalization of marijuana, putting himself and his party on a collision course with the ruling Conservatives ahead of 2015 elections. Trudeau’s stand also differentiates the Liberals from the New Democratic Party (NDP), which has been the progressive party on drug reform, but which only calls for decriminalization.

The Liberals adopted marijuana legalization as a platform in January 2012, but Trudeau had previously lagged behind the party, calling only for decriminalization.

Trudeau revived drug policy as an issue when, at a Kelowna, British Columbia, event Sunday, he spotted someone in the crowd holding a sign calling for decriminalization.

“I’ll take that as a question,” he volunteered. “I’m actually not in favor of decriminalizing cannabis, I’m in favour of legalizing it, tax and regulate,” he said to applause. “It’s one of the only ways to keep it out of the hands of our kids, because the current war on drugs, the current model, is not working.”

In a speech on the House floor, King defended a comment made earlier in the week that “for [every immigrant] who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that they weigh 130 pounds — and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

In a House speech Thursday, King said: “Eighty to 90 percent of the illegal drugs consumed in America come from or through Mexico. I can tell you that in Mexico they are recruiting kids to be drug smugglers, between the ages of 11 and 18.”

Iowa Republican Congressman Calls Immigrants ‘Evil’ Marijuana Smugglers in Racist Remarks

July 25th

Rep. Steve King

Rep. Steve King

WASHINGTON, DC — In an interview with conservative website Newsmax, a Republican congressman from Iowa, Rep. Steve King, called immigrants evil marijuana smugglers who have “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’ve been hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

The remarks came in an interview with conservative website Newsmax magazine, when Rep. King was asked about the DREAM Act, which would give undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children a chance at permanent residency.

Some of them are valedictorians — and their parents brought them in. It wasn’t their fault. It’s true in some cases, but they aren’t all valedictorians. They weren’t all brought in by their parents. For every one who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds — and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’ve been hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.. . . . . OLYMPIA, WA — When Bayside Collective owner Casey Lee saw seven vehicles speed into the parking lot of his Olympia, Washington medical marijuana dispensary Wednesday morning, he thought he was being robbed, and told his employees to take cover.

“When I came outside, there were guns drawn on me,” Lee said Wednesday night. “And then I saw the badges.”

As DEA agents cleaned out the shelves of his dispensary, confiscating an estimated $2,500 worth of medical marijuana and 17 small marijuana plants,  Lee says an agent asked him why he continued to remain in the business of providing medical marijuana.

“One of the DEA agents said: ‘This is your second raid and your third robbery. Why do you keep doing this?’” Lee said.  ”I just told him it’s because we just enjoy helping people, and he told us that he wasn’t expecting that a. . . . . READ MORE

NY Docs Discredit Bloomberg’s Claim that Medical Marijuana is a “Hoax”

June 3rd

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg

NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Bloomberg ran afoul of medical science and the opinions of more than 600 New York physicians when he called medical marijuana “one the great hoaxes of all time” Friday.

The New York medical community has been pushing for the passage of the Compassionate Care Act – AB 6357 / SB 4406 – a bill that would allow healthcare practitioners to talk to their patients about medical marijuana and certify those with serious, debilitating illnesses so that they may have access to a small amount of medical marijuana to relieve their symptoms.

The statement comes just one day after NY Physicians for Compassionate Care held a press conference announcing the support of more than 600 physicians from across New York for medical marijuana legislation pending in Albany.
