Pot, Pipes, Paraphernalia Found at Home of Indian’s Chris Perez

July 12th

Chris PerezROCKY RIVER, OH – A police search of the home of Cleveland Indians pitcher Chris Perez yielded marijuana, pipes and other smoking paraphernalia, court documents said.

Perez, 28, and his wife, Melanie, attended a hearing Tuesday at Rocky River, Ohio, Municipal Court, where the inventory of items found by officers in the June 4 search was filed, the (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Thursday.

The couple pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor drug charges.

The search of the Perez home was conducted after postal inspectors detected and intercepted a package, mailed from Los Angeles to the Perez family dog, that smelled of marijuana, a Postal Service report on the incident read.

During the search of the home, police found a small amount of marijuana, two marijuana pipes, a bong, metal grinders used to break down the plant’s buds and other items, the document filed Tuesday said.

A Rocky River police officer wrote in a report Perez admitted the marijuana and related material belonged to him.

Ohio Medical Marijuana Legalization Petition Drive Underway

June 30th

COLUMBUS, OH — A signature gathering campaign aimed at placing marijuana reform on the ballot has begun in Ohio, and the group sponsoring the initiative is hopeful they will place the issue before voters next year.

The Cannabis Rights Amendment, sponsored by the Ohio Rights Group with the help of local grassroots organizations statewide, would authorize the medical use of marijuana by adults 18 years or older (and minors with parental consent) as well as the cultivation of industrial hemp in the state.

Initially, a list of over 30 debilitating medical conditions would be eligible for medical marijuana.

In order for the Cannabis Rights Amendment to be placed on the 2014 ballot, sponsors need to collect 385,253 signatures in at least 44 of the state’s 88 counties by July 3, 2014.

As with most petition drives for ballot initiatives, the petition campaign is accompanied by a push to register voters because only signatures from registered voters count toward the number needed.

In response to the petition, . . . . . READ MORE

May 13th

COLUMBUS, OH — Legislation to allow the medical use of marijuana has been introduced to the Ohio legislature.

House Bill 153 was introduced to the House by Rep. Robert F. Hagan (D-Youngstown) on May 2, the same day he introduced Joint Resolution 6, which seeks to place an adult-use legalization bill before voters.  The bill is co-sponsored by two fellow Democrats, Reps. Mike Foley and Dan Ramos.

If passed, House Bill 153 would allow patients with a physician’s recommendation, or their designated caregivers, to possess up to two hundred grams (a little over 7 ounces) of usable medical marijuana and grow up to twelve mature marijuana plants.

The proposal does not include authorizing medical marijuana dispensaries, but does allow caregivers to be compensated for cultivating marijuana for registered patients. Caregivers must be 21 or older, and would be subject to the same quantity limits.

The bill would also protect valid medical marijuana card holders fro. . . . . READ MORE
