CA: Double Homicide at Bakersfield Medical Marijuana Dispensary

BAKERSFIELD, CA — Two men were fatally shot Wednesday inside a medical marijuana dispensary in Bakersfield, California, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Michaela Beard said a 911 call reporting possible gunshots fired at the dispensary was received at 9:49 am Wednesday, and officers responded to find two men dead inside the First Reliable medical marijuana collective.

The victims were identified as Devin Scott Daniels, 23, of Bakersfield, and Tony Conrad Sherman, 55, of Los Angeles.

Police would not immediately confirm if the victims were employees or customers, but both are believed to be security guards employed by the collective.

A woman outside the dispensary shortly after the shooting, Cristina Lutrul, told a local tv station that Daniels was her step-brother, and he worked at the dispensary.

“Devin was a good guy,” an emotional Christina Lutrul told KBAK-TV. ”He wasn’t gang-banging. He wasn’t out there in these streets, running around doing crazy stuff. He was a man about his children and about working.”

A second woman, identified as Bridget Daniels, confirmed that her son Devin was an unarmed security guard at the collective.

Israel Patterson, another security guard at First Collective who arrived after the shooting, said that the second victim, 55 year old Tony Sherman, was a friend, mentor and  ”like an uncle to me.”

Police have not released details of the events leading up to the shooting, and would not say whether marijuana, cash or other items were taken from the business.

Officers say a customer believed to have been in the back of the collective may have witnessed the shooting, and multiple security cameras around the property may have recorded the tragic events.

A dark colored SUV was seen speeding from the area shortly after the shooting was reported.

The investigation is ongoing, and a motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

The Bakersfield City Council approved an ordinance in late June banning medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits, scheduled to take effect August 1.

City officials estimate that there are about a dozen medical marijuana dispensaries currently operating in the city.
